COAS Lt. General Lagbaja Passes at 56, President Tinubu Mourns

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, has confirmed the passing of Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, at age 56. In a statement issued by Onanuga, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, announced this solemn news, expressing deep regret over the loss of one of the military’s highest-ranking officers.

Lt. General Lagbaja passed away on Tuesday night in Lagos following a period of illness. Born on February 28, 1968, he was appointed as Chief of Army Staff on June 19, 2023, marking the pinnacle of a distinguished military career that began with his enrollment at the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1987. Commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Infantry Corps in 1992, Lagbaja’s career showcased his dedication to Nigeria’s security and stability.

Known for his tactical leadership, Lagbaja held key roles across numerous security operations. His assignments included commanding positions in the 93 Battalion and the 72 Special Forces Battalion, where he contributed to internal security operations such as Operation ZAKI in Benue State, Lafiya Dole in Borno, Udoka in Southeast Nigeria, and Forest Sanity across Kaduna and Niger States. An alumnus of the U.S. Army War College, he also held a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies, underscoring his commitment to military excellence.

Lt. General Lagbaja is survived by his wife, Mariya, and their two children. President Tinubu extended his heartfelt condolences to Lagbaja’s family and the Armed Forces, acknowledging the significant legacy he leaves behind in Nigeria’s defense. The President honored Lt. General Lagbaja’s contributions and wished him eternal peace.
