On Wednesday 3 May 2023, President Muhammadu Buhari launched the Nigeria 2050 Agenda, a comprehensive plan that aims to boost Nigeria’s real GDP growth by seven percent, create 165 million new jobs, and reduce the number of Nigerians living in poverty to 2.1 million by 2050 .

The launch took place prior to the meeting of the Federal Executive Council this week in the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

During the launch, President Buhari stated that “This vision is the product of a dynamic knowledge-based economy to provide sustainable development by 2050.”

He added that the goal is to increase Nigeria’s per capita income to $33,328 annually, which would place the country among the largest economies in the world by 2050. The president hoped that the policy document would be useful to subsequent administrations.

The launch of the Nigeria 2050 Agenda comes nearly three months after the National Economic Council approved the plan and seven weeks after the Federal Executive Council approved the policy document on March 15.

President Buhari inaugurated the National Steering Committee for the preparation of the National Medium Term Development Plan 2021-2025 and Nigeria’s Agenda 2050 in November 2020.

Its aim is to elevate Nigeria to an upper-middle-income country and thus to high-income country status by 2050.

This launch comes as the President has only 26 days left in office, before it is handed over to the President-elect, Bola Tinubu.

The meeting was attended by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, Secretary of the Union Government, Boss Mustafa, Head of Civil Service, Felshadi Yemi-Esan, and Chief of Staff of the President of the Republic, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari.

Several ministers also attended, including Interior, Science and Technology, Finance, Transport, Agriculture, Health, Communications and Digital Economy, Sports, Aviation, Environment, Works and Housing, and FCT.

Ministers of State for Budget and National Planning, Industry, Trade and Investment, Foreign Affairs and Health also attended.
