INEC predicts 50 per cent voter turnout across country

Must read

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said it is targeting at least 50 per cent voter turnout ahead of the 2023 general election after boosting public confidence in the electoral process.

INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Enugu State, Dr. Chukwuemeka Joseph Chukwu, stated this at the one-day stakeholders’ meeting on strengthening the capacity of citizens in voting process in the Southeast, organised by Community and Youth Development Initiatives (CYDI), yesterday in Enugu.

Chukwu, who was represented by the Head of the Department, Voter Education and Publicity, Achumie Chuka, noted that a boost in citizens’ confidence in the electoral process would also increase their participation in the process.

The REC said INEC had intensified training for ad hoc workers to ensure effective handling of the technological devices.

He added that this would avert situations where wrong forms and, in some cases, unstamped forms would be uploaded on the IREV as witnessed during the Ekiti and Osun governorship elections.

Chukwu noted that despite the successes recorded by the commission so far, there was need for the stakeholders not to rest on their oars as some politicians were still bent on discrediting the process.
